Yvonne: the Cow that Could!

In May of this year, Yvonne the dairy cow escaped slaughter by physically “bull” dozing  her way through a 4,000 watt electric fence to

freedom, making bovine history.

Living amongst deer and foraging with them, Yvonne was facing a shoot to kill order when she ran out in traffic and was nearly hit by a police car.

The race was then on for opposing German forces, those “pro life” and those “pro death” to see who could capture the cow first.  Yvonne was bought by the Gut Aiderbichl sanctuary for 700 Euros.  They also bought her son and her sister in the hopes of enticing her to her new, safe, home environment.  They were then in a race with trigger happy “pro death” squads who fancied cow pie and saw Yvonne as prime beef.

Fortunately for the “pro life” squad Yvonne was spotted by a farmer who saw the cow grazing on his land and called the sanctuary sharpish.

A spokesperson from Gut Aiderbichl sanctuary said that it was confirmed to be Yvonne because of her ear tag.  What the sanctuary do not know, is that our informants in the animal underground have heard whispers that whilst living amongst the deer Yvonne swapped her ear tag with a willing stag, who was proud to assist her in her stand to free cow kind.  Now, this is just rumours at this point, and it could be that the legend of Yvonne has grown so much beyond one cow that animals need to think her free, as some sort of figure head.  Until DNA testing is carried out we won’t know for sure.

For now the official line is that Yvonne is safe and home with family, her adventure at an end.  Our European correspondent, Sarah Ehlers, had this to say on the subject:

“What are my thoughts on the most recent Yvonne news?  You mean after her rodeo like capturing? Well now she lives with her son, her sister and another calf…. what a thrill that must be for her son to move back in with mommy…”

Well we never really thought of it that way.
