You Wanna Buy Which One?

This is a splendid example of a Welsh person, more specifically Mrs. H. Bush, who is such an avid reader of Newnibbles. Fans can get in touch through the newsdesk...

The makers of Monopoly decided to celebrate the recent Royal Wedding (or cash in, evidence is limited) by making a Welsh edition.

Apparently, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, AKA Wills and Kate reside on the Welsh Island of Anglesey and not in Cambridge, as the title would suggest.

Unfortunately that pesky Welsh language has caused problems for this project, especially when it comes to Stations.   Anglesey is home of the World’s longest place name, and subsequently the World’s longest station name: “Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch” – try saying that after a few drinks, or at all…

Apparently the makers did consider using an abbreviation on the card, as they were concerned the name was too long to fit, but having interviewed a few locals they discovered that abbreviating would be unpopular with those sticklers for tradition.  Presumably they opted instead to simply reduce the font to accommodate the length of the name.

We suspect Cardiff Station will be the more popular choice amongst non-native Welsh speakers who may purchase the game.

Amongst our many fans, is a fluent Welsh Speaker, Mr. B from Pembroke, who, as well as being able to ask what primary school you went to, and what flavour ice cream you prefer can also pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.  If we have done it correctly we should have been able to attach a soundbite of him doing just that, for your listening pleasure.
