Everyone’s done it at one point or another.  Looked for a parking space away from the pay and display car park in order to save your

change for the important things in life, like pasties.

However, for one savvy motorist on Saturday this plan backfired, leaving him up the creek without a paddle, or, more accurately all at sea.  According to local fishermen at Portsmouth Docks, the driver of an Alfa Romeo Spider (which is apparently an expensive sports car, not an arachnid) regularly left his car on the slip way whilst he commuted to London.   On Saturday, however witnesses state that the tide came in and swept the car away with it.

Reportedly, parking on the slip way is reserved for fishermen unloading their catch, presumably because they are seasoned sailors and would know how to steer their vehicles out and away from choppy waters.  As it is the driver of the sports car paid no heed to the signage to this effect and was left with a floater.  Perhaps next time he will consider paying the £2 required by the nearby all day car park.  The electricity required to dry his seats off with a hairdryer will surely be in excess of this?

This is the car after it slipped away. See the morbid satisfaction on the face of the fisherman now?

We sent our man on the ground to Portsmouth to see what he could glean about the floating motor.  He gave us this offering:

“It’s no good carping on about what happened and local feeling is that he was just being shellfish by leaving his car perched on the slipway. I’m sure he didn’t do it on porpoise, but there could be something fishy about his car and police are trying to establish if he is the sole owner.”

Well one thing is clear: if you don’t want your car to slip away then don’t park it on a slipway.  We are unaccustomed to having morals to our stories here at Newsnibblesand frankly, it’s all a bit much.

  1. I can’t see the car in the picture! It’s tiny. Alfa Romeo Spiders must be bigger than that. Perhaps you can use a large arrow to point out the car so we know where to look?
