What’s the first thing you ask when you meet a new baby? Could it be “awww, what’s their name?”

This is Satirical Cartoonist and Friend of Newsnibbles, Pat Scullion’s artistic interpretation of today’s story, and is entitled “Proud Father”.

Well, in some cases you may regret that question…

The latest piece of news to come to our attention this week is the Twitter fans (we are presuming they are Twitter fans) who names their baby “Hashtag”.  Yes, really.

Hashtag Jameson, to give the child her full name was born this week, and according to The Independent her parents announced the birth on Facebook, as follows: “Hashtag Jameson was born at 10 o’clock last nite, she weys 8 pounds and i luv her so much!!!!!”

That is some serious punctuation, so we know they must really mean it.

This is not the first instance of social media related names, and we were able to find out in Y Net News.  A couple from Israel named their child “Like”.  That’s “Like”.  Apparently they liked (no pun intended) unique names for their children, and Like’s older siblings were called  Dvash (Hebrew for Honey) and Pie – as in Pie.  According to the report the naming of Like was not necessarily a shout out to the popular social networking site, and simply an attempt to give their child a unique name.  Here at Newsnibbles we hope that this will not lead to future confusion when people are instructed to “press like” as it could be awkward.

And there’s more.  In 2008 the The Guardian reported on a couple from New Zealand who had their child taken off of them for naming her “Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii” – which must have been a nightmare when it came to filling in forms.  The report quoted the Judge as saying:

“The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment that this child’s parents have shown in choosing this name. It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily.”

When we asked the fans what the most unusual baby names they had heard were “Hashtag” was fresh in everyone’s minds.

Other responses were:

  • Zanuss
  • Zowie
  • Mandella
  • Harper Seven
  • Dweezil & Moon Unit
  • Chlamydia
  • Peaches, Trixabelle, Heavenly, Tigerlily (Not of Peter Pan fame)
  • Germajesty
  • Diva Thin Muffin
  • Bristol & Track

And we’ve decided to bring back the quiz, and this Monday we will list some of the above names that belong to the children of celebrities, and we will ask you to name their celebrity parents, so there is a head’s up for you.

And while you’re there why not Like us on Facebook (no relation).
