Driving Dogs Down Under

Yes, we impressed ourselves a bit with that headline.  Alliteration is the new pink.

Here Annie is checking the handbreak as she doesn’t want to roll away…

A New Zealand dog rescue charity has been teaching their residents to drive in an attempt to demonstrate how intelligent dogs actually

are.  The dog on the BBC Video given up by his owners because he was too hard to train, and now he can drive a stick!

The dogs are trained on indoor simulated cars, to press buttons and move the gear stick with their paws.  When he hears the command “A”, Monty knows to push the accelerator.  We are still trying to train the interns to wash their tea cups up with the command “Oi, wash that”, maybe we should try “W”.

Of course, here at Newsnibbles we already knew how clever the canine population was, and have our own Canine Correspondent, Annie Butler.  We asked her how clever she thought these dogs would need to be to learn to drive:

We still think that Monty is very clever, and had he been one of our correspondents we would have kept him Fo Sho.

We asked the fans who was going to be their designated driver this year, as we think the possibilities with fully licensed driving dogs are endless and the charity could really be onto something here.
