Whipsnade Wallaby Backpacking From an Early Age

Well, what with all the over eating and angry protests we’ve been talking about lately there haven’t been enough stories that just make you go

This is a dog in a shopping bag, but you get the idea,

aw.  Fear not, we will fix that for you right now.

Tilly, is a seven month old Wallaby living a Whipsnade Zoo who was found abandoned by her mother in the middle of a lawn last month.  The problem of what to do with an abandoned wallaby fell to Whipsna1de’s industrious keepers, who came up with an ingenious solution.  Tilly moved into a rucksack, which according to the BBC report is “acting as a substitute for [her] mother.”

A keeper carries Tilly around in the rucksack and ensures she gets the regular feeds she requires to make her grow strong.  She will need to live in the bag for another few months before she will be moved to a nursery with other orphaned babies.

We asked the fans whether a rucksack could substitute for their mothers.

Angela said: “Perhaps if you are a baby kangaroo then yes.”  – Sharp as a tack that one, she saw right through our cunning ruse.

Chimp said: “not if I was breastfeeding.”  – Which we hope he wouldn’t be by now.

  1. I love my tiny studio apartment, but rucksack living might be a bit extreme. Nice for the baby wallaby though! 🙂
