A Real Tear Jerker!

Annie Licking Eye
Annie tried to lick her eye, purely for research purposes, but she couldn’t reach. Probably for the best.

Well, this one will bring tears to your eyes, and possibly a bit of throw up in your mouth.  A trend for eyeball licking is spreading through Japan’s teenage population.  According to the majority of reports we read on the topic (we did research here so that you don’t have to), although the trend has been active since at least 2000, with home made eye licking videos rife on Youtube, a recent music video by Japanese pop group “Born” could have popularised the trend for a new generation.  Having watched the video, we would not recommend it, the event itself seemed to be more an attack on the eye than a sensual act of love, and the lickee in question (well, what do you want us to call him) was tied to a chair, which in fact could be likened to eyeball abuse.

The trend, which is also known as “worming” apparently, although, it’s nothing like what the vet does to your dog, (although at least the vet wears rubber gloves) is causing concern amongst eye experts, who fear that it could lead to infection and in some cases blindness.  Apparently the bacteria in the eye is very different from that in the mouth and this could cause all sorts of problems.  There is also the risk that a less considerate partner could deposit random food stuffs in your eye.   We’d really prefer not to think on this much further, and have deliberately not included the quotes from participants in “worming” that other reports have referenced, because we don’t want to, frankly.  Instead, we spoke to our Canine correspondent Annie Butler, and asked her when the last time she was wormed was.  We didn’t give her context, because it’s funnier that way.

If only there were such a pill… The news of eyeball licking has raised global interest and you can read a report in Time,  The Huffington Post and a fantastically witty blog in The Guardian. As we know you are a curious lot, we have embedded the eyeball licking video below.  Warning, this video contains the licking of an eyeball and should not be watched by the faint hearted.  You choose to watch this video at your own risk, and we take no responsibility for the effect it may have on you.  Please do not try eyeball licking at home, in the car, or anywhere else.  Just don’t.  It could make you go blind.  Don’t do it. You’ve been told.
